ALPHA BOYS INSTITUTE

THE ALPHA INSTITUTE

Improving access to music education, particularly among youth in the Caribbean, is top priority for the Vincent & Patricia Foundation. Our mission since 2019 has impacted numerous organizations with a shared vision. One such organization is the incomparable Alpha Boys Institute in Kingston, Jamaica. The internationally renowned Institute, founded in 1880, has had an impeccable history of improving the lives of at-risk young men and launching the music careers of many of the renowned international Jamaican artists we celebrate today.

With an award-winning music program, Alpha offers career training in music theory and performance, disc jockey techniques, audio recording and production as well as academics. Here, the Vincent & Patricia Foundation/Alpha Institute union provides a pathway for students to acquire much needed scholarship funds to attend the program. Additionally, the foundation provides the institution with other financial and music resources, as well as classroom needs.

The Vincent & Patricia Foundation remains steadfast in its efforts to support initiatives dedicated to the advancement of Jamaican music literacy among Caribbean youth.

Pat Chin has been visible at the forefront of the Jamaican music industry for decades. Miss Pat has also been at the forefront of music education in Jamaica. Her support for the Alpha Boys School, now called the Alpha Institute, has been comprehensive and impactful. A past Alpha student herself, Miss Pat has been there for Alpha when the school has needed it most.

When given the opportunity to celebrate her own achievements, as the 2018 honoree at the American Friends of Jamaica Hummingbird Gala in New York City, Miss Pat opted to direct a pledge drive in support of music students at Alpha Institute. The effort raised over US$15,000 to upgrade practice facilities, create work experiences for students and purchase much needed music technology equipment. Miss Pat also helped make it possible for VP Records to become a founding partner of the March for Music Education Scholarship Drive which worked with music industry partners across the United States to create 10 music scholarships at Alpha Institute.

A tireless advocate for the Alpha community, Miss Pat’s willingness to share the Alpha story and mission with the public has been invaluable. Through messages in the annual VP calendar, visibility at VP sponsored events, and the ongoing partnership with the International Reggae Poster Contest, Miss Pat has always made special room for and recognized Alpha’s role whenever possible.
